solar Power

solar Power

Sunlight creating electricity — what a bright idea! It’s quiet and creates no harmful wastes.

Solar power is the conversion of light energy from the sun into electrical energy. It requires photovoltaic cells, sometimes called solar cells.

Although it may seem unlikely, solar power is possible in coastal BC, where it’s frequently cloudy. Solar panels on your roof could provide all of the power needed for an energy-efficient household. More realistically, capturing energy from the sun would drastically reduce your energy bills, but not eliminate them.

How it works

Solar panels are made of two layers of silicon. When sunlight hits the silicon, it makes electrons move. The electrons move towards n-type silicon and away from p-type silicon and are collected by the contact. This creates electric current.
